Ingredients

  • 1 pound of ground beef
  • 1 small white onion diced
  • 1 bell pepper diced
  • 2 poblano peppers or jalapeno peppers diced
  • 2 tablespoons of cooking oil
  • 1 can of pinto beans 16 ounces
  • 1 can of crushed tomatoes 28 ounces
  • 1/4 cup of broth or water
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne powder
  • 2 teaspoons of cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • 2 tablespoons of chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper

Instructions

  • Heat a large pot over medium heat and add the cooking oil. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and poblano or jalapeno peppers. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until softened.
  • Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Stir in garlic powder, cayenne, cumin, paprika, chili powder, cinnamon, salt, and black pepper. Let the spices toast for 1 to 2 minutes to release their flavors.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes, pinto beans, and broth or water. Stir until well combined.
  • Bring to a simmer and cook for 25 to 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chili has thickened and the flavors have blended. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.

Notes

✔️ Let the spices bloom in the pot before adding the liquid. This step deepens the flavor.
✔️ If you want a thicker chili, simmer longer to allow the liquid to reduce.
✔️ For a milder version, replace the poblano or jalapeno with extra bell peppers.
✔️ Chili tastes even better the next day, making it perfect for meal prep.
